With the ever increasing technical complexity and sophistication of trading environments it is only to be expected that very occasionally the dealing room element of an office move can go wrong.

Squared Financial were relocating to new offices at Custom House Plaza 2, Harbourmaster Place, Dublin, which were recently refurbished by our partner company in Ireland, Oryx Ventures. The final part of the project was to move the dealing desks, technology and telecoms equipment and rebuild in their new space, along with the rest of their back office desking and furniture.

It was considered that with only four active desks the project was too small to involve DRC, and could be accomplished by using a local removal company. However we all know that when things go wrong they have a tendency to do so in a big way.

Called in at short notice DRC prepared a remedial action plan together with a program of works and supporting drawings to correct the issues relating to both the dealing desks and comms room. Commencing at 07.30 on a  Saturday morning the desks were first stripped of all technology, moved from position to gain access to the floor below. Grommets repositioned, power outlet boxes relocated. Power & data cabling routed to new locations and desks re-positioned. Flat screen arms re-configured and technology re-built. Simultaneously the comms room was re-configured to allow an additional cabinet.

Handed over to the client on time and to program, DRC were off site by 18.00 hrs, and taking a well earned glass of the black stuff!

Many businesses give employees training in first aid, and there are many benefits of having employees complete training such as CPR and injury prevention. If there is an accident, an employee who has received first aid training may be able to prevent further injury. Employees who are first-aid trained are more likely to be more knowledgeable and conscious of safe behaviour in the business environment, thus preventing injuries in the first place.

I first carried out my first aid training whilst working as a lifeguard during 6^th form.  Ever since then I have kept up to date with the latest training with St John’s Ambulance.  Although I am fully prepared, I have luckily never been in a situation where my skills are required to date.

I completed my latest requalification last week which included procedures to deal with Heart attacks, Resuscitation, Shock, Choking, Bleeding, Burns and scalds, Asthma and Severe allergic reaction just to name a few!

Boutique Trader

My inspiration for this design came from the Tate Modern. Our client was an art collector and he exhibited his art work throughout his office space. The objective of my design was to make these works the main focus of the interior. I achieved this by using a monochrome colour scheme and this worked exceptionally well.

The entrance lobby to the office also had a touch of informality achieved by using a suspended open grid ceiling which exposed the services of pipe work and duct work above the ceiling line. We spray painted the ceiling and upper wall area in black to dramatise the services above and additionally suspended crude fluorescent tube fittings to illuminate the space above to make it a sculptural feature. Our client added his signature, by hanging his question mark print just outside the double entrance doors into the office space.

All the communal areas were additionally refurbished, and once again, the colour scheme was monochrome sharpened with the use of stainless steel door furniture and an industrial look was created with cranked door handles. The elevator walls were cladded in white colour coated glass which gave the space a clinical feel.

In the entrance of the office space, we built a wall to create a waiting area for clients and to privatise the trading area. The wall was painted in racing car green as that was the client’s favourite colour. We also displayed the company’s sign and that was fabricated to look like a piece of contemporary art. The handrail rail detail in the wall is a 70’s classic detail also used at the Tate Modern.

Throughout the office space, we specified luxury carpet tiles in a charcoal colour. The trading desks had light grey laminated tops in a matt finish with graphite grey laminate end panels in a gloss finish to create a totally subdued environment enhancing the art.

I had fun with the entrance door to the boardroom. Whilst it is a serious room for business, I decided to apply a textured metal laminate to the surface of the door and this made a real statement and a conversation piece.  The window treatments were a high specification perforated solar sun screen which were chosen to protect both the art and the traders.  We fabricated roller blinds in a graphite grey colour with an aluminium anodized bar at the bottom with a silver chain to operate the fitting.

It may seem like a gimmick, a flash accessory that designers use to make their workspace look more important, but the advantages of working with multiple screens are real. They don’t just look nice, they actually increase efficiency and productivity as well. According to studies done by the Jon Peddie Research, productivity increases by an average of 42% when using multiple displays.

A key part of the  fit out project at One London Wall for Infinity Capital Markets was the installation of the generator on the roof as part of the UPS power back up system.
